Purpose Of The Role

The R&D Technician supports the research, development, and testing of innovative construction materials, systems, and technologies that enhance the performance and sustainability of the built environment.

Role In MMC

The R&D Technician plays a pivotal role in advancing MMC by turning innovative concepts into practical solutions. Through lab and workshop testing, data collection, and technical support, they help validate new materials and systems, refine digital construction processes, and contribute to industrialised building methods. They work alongside engineers, designers, and sustainability experts to ensure that innovations are feasible, efficient, and ready for integration into the wider construction sector.

Education

  • Leaving Certificate with strong science and technology subjects
  • PLC course in Construction Technology, Engineering Technology, or Applied Science
  • Higher Certificate or Ordinary Degree in Construction, Materials Science, Engineering, or Applied Research

Training & Certifications

  • Laboratory Skills training (e.g., QQI Level 5 Science or Engineering modules)
  • R&D methodology training from centres of innovation or industry partners
  • Health & Safety training (e.g., Safe Pass, Chemical Handling, First Aid)
  • QQI Level 5 or 6 in relevant technical disciplines
  • Occupational health & safety certification where required
  • BIM or CAD training certifications (if supporting design testing)
