Sustainability Materials Specialist

Purpose Of The Role

The Sustainability Materials Specialist identifies, evaluates, and promotes the use of environmentally sustainable materials in construction projects, ensuring compliance with regulations and contributing to low-carbon, circular, and healthy building outcomes.

Role In MMC

In MMC environments, the Sustainability Materials Specialist ensures that materials used in off-site fabrication and modular systems meet both structural and environmental performance requirements. They assess embodied carbon, supply chain impacts, and end-of-life reuse strategies—helping manufacturers and contractors select low-impact products that align with green building certifications and climate targets.

Suggested Entry Routes

Education

  • NFQ Level 7–9 in Architecture, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Materials Science, Sustainable Design, or Construction Technology.
  • Postgraduate study in Sustainable Building Design or Environmental Engineering is beneficial.

Experience

  • Experience in material specification, sustainability consulting, product development, or environmental assessment in construction.
  • Exposure to MMC, timber systems, or low-carbon retrofitting is highly advantageous.

Training & Certifications

  • CPD in Green Building Standards (LEED, BREEAM, Passive House).
  • Training in EPD/LCA tools and material sustainability assessment (e.g. One Click LCA, eTool).
  • ISO 14001 Environmental Management training.
  • Awareness of Product Certification Schemes (e.g. NSAI, EPD Ireland, Cradle to Cradle).
