Sustainability Director

Purpose Of The Role

The Sustainability Director leadsthe development and implementation of sustainability strategies across all areas of the construction business, ensuring environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance aligns with organisational values, regulatory requirements, and client expectations.

Role In MMC

The Sustainability Director plays a critical role in embedding sustainable principles within MMC delivery, influencing everything from material selection and factory emissions to whole-life carbon assessment and circular economy practices. They align MMC innovation with ESG targets, policy drivers, and client demands—positioning sustainability as both a compliance requirement and competitive advantage.

Suggested Entry Routes

Education

  • NFQ Level 8–9 in Environmental Science, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Sustainability, or Corporate Responsibility.
  • Master’s degree in Sustainability Leadership, Environmental Policy, or Construction Management is a strong advantage.

Experience

  • 10+ years in sustainability roles in the built environment or infrastructure sectors, with at least 3–5 years in a leadership position.
  • Background in construction, engineering, environmental management, or corporate ESG.

Training & Certifications

  • Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), LEED AP, BREEAM Assessor, or WELL Accredited Professional.
  • Training in ESG reporting frameworks (GRI, CSRD, CDP).
  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and EPD training.
  • CPD in MMC, carbon accounting, and circular economy practices.
