Plumbing Technician

Purpose Of The Role

The Plumbing Technician installs, maintains, and tests plumbing systems that provide safe water supply, heating, and sanitation in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.

Role In MMC

Plumbing technicians are central to MMC by installing prefabricated plumbing assemblies, integrating with smart and sustainable systems, and ensuring quality control in factory or site-based environments. They enable quicker builds, improved energy efficiency, and better coordination with off-site construction phases.

Suggested Entry Routes

Experience

  • Work as a plumbing assistant, general construction labourer, or mechanical helper
  • Experience in maintenance, facilities, or heating installation

Education

  • Junior or Leaving Certificate (ideally including maths and science)
  • QQI Level 5 Construction or Engineering course
  • Direct entry into the SOLAS Plumbing Apprenticeship (NFQ Level 6)

Training & Certifications

  • SOLAS Registered Plumbing Apprenticeship (4 years, phases 2–7)
  • Safe Pass Certification (mandatory on Irish construction sites)
  • Manual Handling and Working at Heights
  • Gas Installer Registration (RGI) if working with gas appliances
  • Additional modules in Solar Thermal Systems, Heat Pumps or Rainwater Harvesting
