The Painter prepares and applies finishes such as paint, stains, and coatings to buildings, ensuring both protection and visual appeal.
Role In MMC
Painters support MMC by working with new materials and finishes suited for off-site fabrication, modular builds, and high-performance coatings. They contribute to airtightness, durability, and fire resistance of components, especially in prefabricated environments and final onsite installations.

Suggested Entry Routes
Experience
- On-the-job learning as an apprentice or general labourer
- Experience in DIY or community renovation projects
- Voluntary work in painting and decorating
Education
- Junior or Leaving Certificate (preferably with art or technology subjects)
- Level 4–5 QQI or Post-Leaving Certificate course in Painting & Decorating
- Phase 2–7 of SOLAS Painting and Decorating Apprenticeship Programme
Training & Certifications
- SOLAS Registered Apprenticeship in Painting & Decorating (4-year programme, NFQ Level 6)
- Safe Pass Certification (mandatory for construction work)
- Manual Handling Certificate
- Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) ticket (for larger sites)
- Training in Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) paints or low-carbon finishes (optional)
