Bringing Industry Research and Innovation to Each Construction Site
Targeted research is pivotal when it comes to making the transition to MMC as seamless as possible. Construct Innovate, Ireland's National Research Centre for Construction Technology and Innovation is leading that change.

Construct Innovate, Ireland's National Research Centre for Construction Technology and Innovation, have identified Productivity, Affordability and Cost as one of key pillars of the Centre. Dr Daniel McCrum, associate professor at University College Dublin (UCD) and a founder of the University’s Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) Research Group, as well as a member of the Centre Executive Managment Committee at Construct Innovate, leads on executing projects connected to this. In this regard, he and other researchers can identify the areas that require research to support what’s happening on the ground in the construction industry.
There is a real appetite for the use of—and further research into—MMC in the sector. With that in mind, construction research generally could do with a greater injection of funding to help build the ‘critical mass’ needed for wider MMC adoption.

Construct Innovate is hosted at University of Galway and unites more than 23 multidisciplinary research groups and 300+ researchers from 11 research-performing organisations (RPOs) in Ireland. To date, the Construct Innovate team has collaborated with 200+ industry partners on impactful R&D projects worth more than €300 million – all with the vision to make Ireland a leader in sustainable construction and built environment technology.
Construct Innovate leverages the capabilities of its network of academics, researchers and sector experts to lead research, development and innovation under the pillars of:
- Productivity, Affordability & Cost
- Quality & Safety
- Sustainability
- Skills & Training

But the remit of the Centre extends far beyond the theory-based research into real-life industry projects. To this end, Construct Innovate also offers:
- Funding to develop / adapt technologies in response to construction-related challenges.
- Supports to access grants through national and international funding bodies.
- Opportunities to second innovation researchers from partner universities to help organisations address R&D challenges.
- Access to RPOs expertise and testing infrastructure.
- An Open Knowledge Hub containing reports, databases, calculators, and webinars.
- Industry-academia collaboration opportunities and multi-directional networking.
