Presenting a United Front to Promote MMC Upskilling in the Construction Industry

The partnership between Skillnet MMC Accelerate and MMC Ireland will help ensure a collaborative approach to the promotion of upskilling in the space.

As the voice for the Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) industry across the country, MMC Ireland dedicates itself to promoting and advancing the interests of our members and the sector as a whole. The organisation provides a unified voice, advocacy, and support to help MMC companies grow and succeed. It is a knowledge bridge between the industry and Government, working collaboratively with other bodies and agencies to help create a sustainable MMC industry in Ireland.

But its aspirations for the MMC sector in Ireland do not end there, said Paul Tierney, CEO of MMC Ireland.

We want to see the Irish government create a sustainable MMC industry in Ireland, and at the same time for Ireland to become a centre of excellence in Europe.

To achieve this, government must lead the way – a role they are now fulfilling wholeheartedly.

I think ours is one of very few governments showing true leadership in MMC adoption. They are also doing this in collaboration with industry. There is so much going on in the space; and we could use even more coordination between the various bodies.

MMC-relevant skills are, and will continue to be, central to the drive towards MMC adoption.

All industries, including construction, are facing challenges securing the people and skills needed. And while MMC is closely associated with the building sector, in many cases the skills required are different. That makes developing these specific capabilities a priority.

With MMC, the output is a manufactured product delivered faster and more safely, but the skills required are different to those being used for the last 20 years. That is why MMC skills are so important.

For potential employees in the MMC space, it’s hard to argue with the benefits of this type of work. When you look at the differences between a career in traditional construction and in MMC, many of the factors revolve around work-life balance. With MMC you are generally working in a factory-controlled environment, indoors, and with better facilities than on a building site. Crucially, you are also in the same location each day.

A site could be anywhere, which means you could be working away from home. That makes it harder for people to plan their week, particularly where they have children.

A career in MMC also usually comes with a much safer environment and a far lower risk of injury. Add to that ample scope for career progression, and it is not hard to see the appeal.

As the leading sector representative body, MMC Ireland unites the collective expertise of our members to provide guidance, support and project insights on key industry issues. From technical standards and best practices to training and professional development, the organisation ensures that all members have the resources and regulatory environment they need to succeed in today’s competitive—and increasingly global—marketplace.

The partnership between MMC Ireland and Skillnet MMC Accelerate offers mutual benefits. For example, Skillnet MMC Accelerate will have a direct link to the MMC sector by gaining access to the 80-plus members of MMC Ireland. In turn MMC Ireland will benefit by getting an opportunity to help shape what “good looks like” in the MMC sector.

The new platform will help more people to understand the MMC landscape and act as a signpost for those who wish to undertake courses or embark on a career here.
