Purpose Of The Role

The Bricklayer builds walls, partitions and other structures using bricks, blocks, and mortar, ensuring they are level, strong, and built to design.

Role In MMC

Bricklayers remain essential in MMC projects, particularly in hybrid systems that combine traditional methods with offsite construction. Their skills are used for cladding, outer leaf brickwork, and finishing works on modular units. Increasingly, bricklayers are also working with brick slips, prefabricated wall panels, and automated bricklaying tools, making the role more efficient and future-focused.

Suggested Entry Routes

Experience

  • Junior Certificate or Leaving Certificate (preferably with maths or technology subjects)
  • Entry into an apprenticeship through the SOLAS system

Education

  • Previous experience as a general operative or construction labourer
  • Informal work with family trades or small contractors

Training & Certifications

  • Brick and Stonelaying Apprenticeship (SOLAS) – a 4-year programme including both on-site experience and off-the-job training
  • On-site mentoring under a qualified bricklayer
  • Safe Pass (mandatory)
  • Manual Handling Certificate
  • CSCS card for specific tasks (e.g., working at height or abrasive wheels, if relevant)
